Court of Appeals Bids Farewell to Justice Colvin

Atlanta, July 29, 2021 – The judges of the Court of Appeals extend their best wishes to their former colleague, Justice Verda Colvin, who was sworn in to the Supreme Court today by Governor Brian Kemp.

Justice Colvin was appointed to the Court of Appeals of Georgia by Governor Brian Kemp in April 2020. She came to the court from the Superior Court of Bibb County, where she sat for six years, after her appointment to the bench by Governor Nathan Deal in 2014. Justice Colvin was the first African-American female judge in that Circuit and was re-elected without opposition in 2016.

Her service to Georgia’s citizens began long before that, though, as Judge Colvin served as an Assistant United States Attorney in the Middle District of Georgia, where she prosecuted a wide array of felony offenses ranging from drug trafficking to white-collar crime. Before that, she served as an Assistant District Attorney in Clayton County and as an Assistant Solicitor in Athens-Clark County. She began her legal career in private practice in Charlotte, NC, after earning her law degree from the University of Georgia School of Law.

“The Court of Appeals has been fortunate to have Judge Colvin,” said Court of Appeals Chief Judge Brian M. Rickman. “The Supreme Court will be well served by her diligence and by her thoughtful and careful analysis. We wish her the very best in her new role.”
