Stephen Louis A. Dillard Elected Chief Judge of the Court of Appeals of Georgia

    Presiding Judge Stephen Louis A. Dillard of Macon, Georgia, has been unanimously elected as the new Chief Judge of the Court of Appeals of Georgia.  He will assume the position on July 1, 2017, succeeding Chief Judge Sara L.     The Court of Appeals’s chief judge is responsible for the administration of the Court, supervising the Court’s fiscal affairs, initiating policies and representing the Court in its relations with other courts, agencies of the government, the State Bar of Georgia, and the general public.  The term of the Chief Judge of the Court of Appeals of Georgia is for two years.

    Presiding Judge Dillard was appointed as the 73d judge of the Court of Appeals of Georgia on November 1, 2010 by Governor Sonny Perdue. On July 31, 2012, Presiding Judge Dillard was elected by his fellow Georgians to serve a full six-year term. Prior to joining the Court, Presiding Judge Dillard was in private practice with James, Bates, Pope & Spivey, LLP, serving as chairman of the firm’s appellate practice group. He also served as a law clerk to Judge Daniel A. Manion of the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, and as an associate with Stone & Baxter, LLP. Presiding Judge Dillard received his B.A. from Samford University and his J.D. from  The Mississippi College School of Law. He is a member of numerous professional and civic organizations, including the Federalist Society for Law and Public Policy, Macon Bar Association, William Augustus Bottle American Inn of Court, Palaver Club of Macon, and Samford University Alumni Association Executive Council (to name just a few). Presiding Judge Dillard is a frequent lecturer, and he has had several scholarly essays and articles published over the years (with his latest appearing in Duke University’s Judicature this past spring). He is married to the former Krista McDaniel, and they have three children. The Dillards are members of Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Macon, Georgia.
